Storm Water Discharge Concerns for Housing Development
Flood Risk Assessment and Discharge
W. Yorks

Keepmoat contacted us because Bradford Council, who was in partnership with Keepmoat, had raised a legitimate concern relating to the discharge of storm water from the development site to a local authority maintained culvert. Both parties were very keen to resolve the issue and prevent unnecessary delays to the commencement of the development.

The first step was for Envireau Water to carry out an independent review and liaise with drainage engineers at the local authority to understand the root of the problem. The concerns related to the condition and capacity of the culvert and the way in which a new connection would be established. A series of discussions identified that the issues could be resolved through maintaining the existing connection point to the culvert. Once this was established, Keepmoat’s design team were able to work-up a revised drainage scheme, and the development could move forward.

Although this particular problem did not require a highly technical solution, it highlights the importance of understanding the regulatory framework and finding practical and pragmatic solutions to drainage problems.
