Phil Ham gives us a round of the recent Annual Luncheon of the Maltsters’ Association of Great Britain. Phil attended as the guest of Dr Richard Broadbent from Bairds Malt. He was treated to a beer reception and our Annual Luncheon, at which 72 members and guests of the malting industry were privileged to dine in the beautiful historic surroundings of the Armourers’ Hall in London.
Luncheon commenced with the Chairman introducing Mr Rupert Ponsonby our beer sommelier for the event who waxed lyrical about the different beers we had with each course of the meal.
At the conclusion of an excellent meal Mr Wilkes introduced our whisky sommelier, Mr David Frost from the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), who treated us to a talk about the quality whiskies available on each table kindly donated by our distiller maltsters Highland Distillers Plc and Diageo Scotland Ltd.
Mr Wilkes thanked both beer and whisky sommeliers for their entertaining and insightful words going on to introduce our guest speaker this year, Brigid Simmonds of the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA).
Ms Simmonds spoke of the essential part of brewing being that of the inclusion of malt which contributed many aspects to the beer. She highlighted that the vast majority of British beer was produced using British grown malt with the malting industry of the UK being the 3rd largest in the world.
