Celebrating Earth Science Week

October 17, 2019

This week is Earth Science Week!

Not familiar with Earth Science Week? It’s an annual international celebration of the geology all around us. The UK has incredibly diverse geology, within a relatively small area. The rocks that make up our islands represent a long and complicated history of geological events. They evidence most of the major periods of geological time and extremes of climate from desert to glacier. Our geology played a big part in the Industrial Revolution and has shaped the way Britain has evolved. It’s a good week to pay attention to what’s under our feet!

Through public events like geowalks, hands-on activities, talks and open days, organisations and individuals aim to raise public awareness of geology and how it affects our lives. Coordinated by the American Geoscience Institute in the US, and the Geological Society of London in the UK and Ireland, the week also takes place in an increasing number of countries around the world.

The theme this year is Geoscience is for everyone. The Geological Society want to show the diversity of geoscientists working in the field today, so they’ve asked people working in geoscience to submit photos of themselves in their working environments. Our team has got involved, sending in snaps taken on site over the last couple of weeks. We’ve got a Hydrogeologists in quarries and on industrial sites, a Geoscientist outside her office and an Earth Scientist out in the field, quite a variety! Check out our social channels to see all of our Geoscientists in action.

Join the conversation on social media with the hashtags #IAMANEARTHSCIENTIST and #EarthSciWeek.

At Envireau Water, we’ve got a varied team of water management specialists, hydrogeologists, geologists, geoscientists, hydrologists and earth scientists. If you have any water-related issue, chances are, we can help! Meet the team here.

Achieving nutrient neutrality is a challenging task, and is one that developers all over the country have battled to achieve over the last 5-6 years. In March 2022, Natural England issued a directive to Local Planning Authorities, County Councils, the Environment Agency, the Planning Inspectorate, Natural Resources Wales, and DLUHC stating that, in specific river catchments, developments should not be permitted if the LPA cannot definitively ensure that it will not adversely impact protected environmental sites due to increased levels of nitrate and/or phosphate. Whilst there is an approach which is efficient, robust and objective, it can be equally as slow, expensive and over burdensome, leaving housing developers with the potential for project delays and increased costs. James, can you tell us more about nutrient neutrality?

We're thrilled to welcome Bethan Joule to our growing Shrewsbury office! Bethan joins us as a Senior Hydrogeologist, bringing over six years of experience in technical roles at Wardell Armstrong. Prior to this, she graduated from Queen’s University Belfast with an MSc in Environmental Engineering in 2019. Bethan is experienced in preparing abstraction licence applications, delivering Hydrogeological Risk Assessments (HRAs), and overseeing a wide range of site investigations — including borehole drilling and hydrogeological testing - across multiple sectors, including minerals, waste, and construction. At Envireau Water , Bethan will be continuing to provide similar hydrogeological services to our extensive client base whilst also developing complimentary skills across our broad range of sectors.

Across the globe, plastic pollution is becoming an increasingly crucial topic, with an estimated 400 million tonnes being produced every year world wide. While the focus is often on visible plastic (including bottles, bags, and packaging), a growing body of research is turning its attention to the invisible threat of microplastics and emerging contaminants, which are increasingly finding their way into water sources, food chains and even the air we breathe. What are microplastics? Microplastics are a growing threat to the health of our planet. Despite being barely visible, these tiny plastic particles account for roughly 8% of global plastic waste, a number that is set to increase in the coming years.
