The Geological Society has recently formed an Early Career Network Committee, which our Senior Hydrogeologist Deborah Thomas is thrilled to have been elected on to.

The Network’s key aims are to:

  • Provide support and guidance for professional development across all sectors of geoscience, recognising the varied needs of those in different sectors and career stages.
  • Translate best practise in increasing early career engagement from comparable organisations to the Geological Society.
  • Organise events and activities across the UK.
  • Develop and maintain active online communications.

Deborah is already involved with the Geological Society as a committee member of the East Midlands Regional Group, and this year has also taken part in the Early Career Geologist Award; presented at the Contaminated Land and Groundwater Conference, and spoken to students at the Career and Industry Day about what a career in Hydrogeology entails.

Reflecting on her appointment to the committee, Deborah commented: “From my own experience, I think it is incredibly important to support early career geologists. Each geologist or earth scientist has their own talent and experiences to bring into the wider geological community, and I think it’s important to help them find that, and to help them explore the possibilities their careers could take.”
