Well, not only is that a truism, but highlights the significance of the subject being thoroughly understood along with how vital is it that young people continue to study this subject. With student numbers down and continuing to drop within Earth Science degrees, we need a revival if we are to keep and inspire a new generation of geologists.

A common misconception is that geology is all about oil and gas, however gaining planning permission for a new housing development requires an understanding of the ground structure and rock type of the area. The quarrying industry produces key building materials as well as to pave your driveways and line your paths. The water you drink and the jewellery you wear also requires geological understanding.
