Mairi Reflects on 12 months at Envireau Water

August 10, 2023

Time flies when you're having fun, and we can't believe Mairi has already been part of the Envireau Team for almost a year! Let's take a look back over her time with us so far…

Mairi joined our North Office on a work experience placement in the Spring of 2022, which formed part of her postgraduate studies at the University of Glasgow. She enjoyed her placement with us so much that she joined the Envireau Team in September after completing her MSc in Sustainable Water Environments, beginning her career as a Hydrologist.

Since joining Envireau Water's Midlands Office, Mairi has been involved in a broad range of projects involving hydraulic, hydrodynamic, and flood modelling, groundwater monitoring, and various site work activities. She has also attended conferences on river restoration and represented the company at career events!

We asked Mairi to reflect on her journey with us and what her position as a hydrologist involves; here's what she had to say…

"I've thoroughly enjoyed the past 12 months at Envireau Water. The technical work is exciting and dynamic, with no two days the same! I've been lucky to contribute to various projects and work with the team across our Scottish, North Yorkshire, Midlands, and Welsh offices.

Having completed my MSc independent project on the 'Performance assessment of HEC-RAS and Flood Modeller for simulating flow events in a braided river system', I have continued to develop my modelling and hydrologic capabilities with guidance from the diverse technical team.

Working at Envireau Water has given me a great start in my career, and I'm looking forward to my future with the business."

Envireau Water's Senior Hydrologist/Project Manager, Rebecca Thirkell, added:

"
I have had the pleasure of supporting Mairi through her first year at Envireau Water, where she compliments our surface water team perfectly!

I have personally mentored Mairi through new modelling software and am delighted to contribute to her early career in consultancy. Mairi is now building a portfolio of skills working on a wide range of projects across the company as we continue to support her technical development."

The entire Envireau Water team are proud of Mairi's development, and with three new graduates joining us this summer, we can't wait to support them too! If you want to start your career on the right path, check out our careers page and send your CV and cover letter to

As much as we all love the sunshine and have been embracing the recent warmer weather spell across the UK, the prolonged dry conditions are now raising concerns that England may be at risk of a potential drought this summer. Following an exceptionally sunny and dry April, which experienced just over 56% of usual rainfall, the start of May was also the warmest on record, surpassing the previous high set in 1990. With water resources already strained, it is more important than ever that proactive measures are promptly adopted to mitigate this risk, promote water conservation and avoid the potential for future restrictions. We asked Principal Water Resources Specialist, Tamsin Morey , for her thoughts on the matter... Tamsin, what dangers are we already seeing in the UK?
