Meet the Newest Members of Envireau Water

October 16, 2023

We are delighted to welcome two new members to the Envireau Team!

Penny is one of three graduates we’ve welcomed to the team this year, having joined Envireau Water as a Geologist in September.

Before joining us,
Penny completed an MSci in Earth Sciences at Durham University. During her degree, she worked with the Coal Authority on a mine water heating system in Sunderland, creating a subsurface map of old mine workings to calculate the efficiency of a heat battery in the area. And, in her final year, Penny specialised in using ArcGIS Pro, creating maps, and WebApps.

Based in our North Office, Penny will be working closely with all members of the team, working on a wide range of water resources, regulatory and environmental monitoring projects.

She added: “Since starting work at Envireau Water, I have already attended site work on numerous occasions with Lewis Miles, and assisted with several abstraction licence applications. Welcomed warmly by the Envireau Water team, I’m looking forward to developing my proficiency in Hydrogeology, and working with a variety of people throughout the business.

Jo joined the Envireau Water team a week later as a graduate based at our North Office. Jo will be working closely with Deborah Thomas, and Alastair Rose, assisting with environmental monitoring reports, monitoring rounds, and abstraction licence applications.

Prior to this role, Jo gained an MSc in Applied Environmental Hydrogeology at the University of Edinburgh, having previously graduated from the University of Leeds with a BSc (Hons) in Geological Sciences.

Jo commented: “I’m delighted to join the team alongside Penny, only two weeks in, I've already initiated monitoring of a greenfield quarry development to support a dewatering application, and conducted water features surveys. The team have been equally inviting and I’m feeling really positive about my development opportunities.

Lauren Moore, Operations Manager, commented: “We love to see our team grow, and better still develop their technical and consulting capabilities. It’s a privilege to support both Penny and Jo on their graduate journeys and we endeavour to give them the best start to their careers.”

Envireau Water offers a unique opportunity to graduates, with an unparalleled variety of projects to grow a breadth and depth of expertise. If you’re interested in joining our talented team, take a look at our careers page to learn about our current vacancies.

As for Penny, Jo, and Katy (who joined us in August) we will be keeping up to date with them as they settle in!

Desertification and drought are two of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century. Exacerbated by climate change, the devastating effects of both can be felt across the globe, with an estimated 40% of the world's population impacted by water scarcity events. As global temperatures continue to rise, and severe weather events increase, regions across the globe face the potential for increased frequency and severity of droughts, often progressing rapidly and unexpectedly. As of 29th May this year, a drought was officially declared in parts of the UK, having experienced the driest start to Spring in over 130 years. Whilst the recent rainfall at the start of June has helped to stabilise concerns, uncertainty for the months ahead still remain. How is the UK landscape affected by drought?
