There are many reasons why your yield may be declining, or your water quality has changed. One common problem in boreholes is chemical and microbiological ‘clogging’. This reduces hydraulic efficiency and yield as well as dramatically reducing the lifespan of pumps if the problem is not resolved. Odour related issues, discolouration and the presence of sloughed biofilm in pipework also link back to clogging complications.
To get to the bottom of the problem, understanding what chemical-biological processes are taking place in boreholes is crucial. A common assessment method is the Biological Activity Reaction Test (BART), which detects the presence or lack of, of many different bacteria.
We recently used BART as part of an assessment method to investigate the concerns raised over a borehole at Manchester United’s training ground. Take a read to see how we got to the bottom of their borehole problems.
