Beginning a New Job During the Covid-19 Pandemic

A lot has happened in the last three months, lockdown, social distancing, and the temporary closing of many businesses; however, for a small number including Josephine, this has also been the beginning of a new job.

A lot has happened in the last three months, lockdown, social distancing, and the temporary closing of many businesses; however, for a small number including Josephine, this has also been the beginning of a new job.

Josephine packed up her bags and moved down to the Midlands in March to begin her career with Envireau Water as a Marketing Assistant and she has quite the story to tell:

“Three months have flown by! Those usual new job nerves have been amplified by starting the exciting position at Envireau Water with only one week in the office before I had to pack up and return to Yorkshire.

This turn of events brought its own worries. I was daunted by the prospect of starting a job without the face to face support of colleagues and not knowing how long the situation would last. I was disappointed that at a time when I should have been learning and exploring, I would instead be social distancing and working from home.

Fast forward three months and I am happy and settled in my job. I’ve learnt a lot, from developing working relationships via Microsoft teams, learning the intricacies of marketing a service, creating content and building a website to mention a few.

I’ve also learnt a lot about Envireau Water, even from afar. I’ve been welcomed and made to feel part of the team, I have a role to play in the company and I’m enjoying learning and developing new skills. We have weekly team meetings with the whole company and daily catch up sessions in smaller groups, allowing us to focus on the work at hand and, importantly, to stay in touch. As well as work-related sessions, we’ve been holding weekly quizzes and yoga and Pilates sessions! It’s all taught me the importance of having a supportive and friendly work environment.

Although it is an unusual start to a new profession, I have thoroughly enjoyed my first few months at Envireau Water. I am, however, looking forward to working in an office again and getting to know the team behind the screens.”

At Envireau Water we pride ourselves in being inclusive and have a close-knit team who have all come together to support Josephine. Envireau Water’s Managing Director, Dr Phil Ham commented, “It’s an absolute pleasure to have Josephine on board, she is already proving to be a great asset to the Envireau team and has taken the uncertainty and challenges presented to her by the pandemic in her stride! Needless to say, we are of course looking to welcome Josephine into the team with our usual trip to the local pub when we can!"

Desertification and drought are two of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century. Exacerbated by climate change, the devastating effects of both can be felt across the globe, with an estimated 40% of the world's population impacted by water scarcity events. As global temperatures continue to rise, and severe weather events increase, regions across the globe face the potential for increased frequency and severity of droughts, often progressing rapidly and unexpectedly. As of 29th May this year, a drought was officially declared in parts of the UK, having experienced the driest start to Spring in over 130 years. Whilst the recent rainfall at the start of June has helped to stabilise concerns, uncertainty for the months ahead still remain. How is the UK landscape affected by drought?
