Conference season is well underway!

October 24, 2022

This month, whilst our team delivered hydraulic models, hydrogeological impact assessments, drainage designs and many other specialist reports, some of us managed to sneak out to a conference or two…

On the 18th October, James Dodds took to the stage at the Housing Forum National Conference 2022 in London. The Housing Forums purpose is to encourage collaborative solutions that increase supply and delivery of quality homes through partnership.

This year’s conference was themed ‘Shared Strength through Housing Partnerships’ and to this end James Dodds and RSK colleague Marc Perry talked about ‘Nutrient Neutrality, what it is and what can be done about it.’

James Dodds commented “This was a new conference for us, but it was a pleasure supporting our RSK colleagues and was a fascinating insight into the challenges faced by the house builders. I hope that the attendees enjoyed our presentation as much as I enjoyed the discussions around the pathway to Zero Carbon."

Following this, on the 20th October, Envireau Water hosted a table for clients and staff at the British Soft Drinks Association annual industry lunch, at the Savoy in London.

This key event is a staple in our calendar, and this year was attended by
James Dodds, Phil Ham, Penny Jenkinson, and Jenny Harrison, together with our clients from Waterlogic, Trederwen Springs, Marlish Water and Radnor Hills.

The lunch was supported by guest speaker, former England Rugby legend and broadcaster, Martin Bayfield, and provided an excellent day of opportunities to network and socialise with leading industry figures, those from related industries, the media and government.

Penny Jenkinson commented “We were once again delighted to attend this annual event, to meet with clients and colleagues old and new, from across the soft drinks industry. Envireau Water is an active member of The British Soft Drinks Association, and it is an honour to work in collaboration with BSDA members through the Bottled Water and Sustainability working groups.”

But, what's next in the events calendar?

The #BHUC2022 run in collaboration with British Soft Drinks Association, will take place on the 3rd November at the National Memorial Arboretum.

Our renowned conference is well known for its expert selection of speakers, now in its 10th year, this year is no different! A group of specialist individuals have been selected to bring our theme ‘Making the Invisible, visible’ to life, drawing on practical case studies, years of industry experience and an outstanding understanding of their subject areas.

The afternoon will consist of two fantastic workshops, the first of which will lead by Severn Trent Water, who will lead discussions about common borehole ‘myths’, using case studies from the water industry to demonstrate what can go wrong with boreholes, and how to avoid them going wrong in the first place! Our parallel workshop on Water Stewardship, run by Envireau Water in collaboration with colleagues from Central Solutions and The Alliance for Water Stewardship, will be a hands-on practical session discussing what stewardship can offer to abstractors and the journey towards certification, with a focus on how to successfully undertake stakeholder engagement.

Water professionals can expect to leave the day buzzing with newfound confidence, a greater knowledge of boreholes and private water supplies, and practical ways to understand and overcome the day-to-day challenges of working within the regulated water environment

Desertification and drought are two of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century. Exacerbated by climate change, the devastating effects of both can be felt across the globe, with an estimated 40% of the world's population impacted by water scarcity events. As global temperatures continue to rise, and severe weather events increase, regions across the globe face the potential for increased frequency and severity of droughts, often progressing rapidly and unexpectedly. As of 29th May this year, a drought was officially declared in parts of the UK, having experienced the driest start to Spring in over 130 years. Whilst the recent rainfall at the start of June has helped to stabilise concerns, uncertainty for the months ahead still remain. How is the UK landscape affected by drought?

Envireau Water is delighted to welcome Tom Onslow to our North Office in Richmond! Tom joined us at the start of the month from Western Australia, where he gained experience working as a Field Hydrogeologist. Prior to this, Tom graduated from Newcastle University with a Master of Earth Science (MEarthSci). Tom is experienced in both field and desk-based activities, including the supervision of water exploration drilling programs, conducting hydrogeological sampling and logging, carrying out pumping tests and analysis and designing and installing groundwater monitoring networks. Tom has also built a strong foundation in technical reporting, having contributed to a wide range of water-related projects, particularly across the mining sector. At Envireau Water, Tom will continue to develop his hydrogeological expertise and provide technical support across a range of sectors both on site and in the office.

As the threat of climate change continues to grow, the occurrence of extreme weather events is becoming increasingly common across the UK, with the rising frequency of flooding and drought posing significant challenges nationwide. After the recent dry spell experienced across the UK, one thing is clear: climate change is a hazard affecting all industries and it is more important than ever for businesses to take proactive steps to secure their water supplies against these unpredictable weather events. We asked our Principal Hydrogeologist, Shona Symon , for her thoughts on the matter within the bottled water industry. Shona, can you explain the importance for operators to safeguard their water bottling plant against the impacts of climate change, and what challenges may arise if not adequately protected?
