Delays to the Abstraction Licence Reform

Hot off the Press! We’ve just received an update from the Environment Agency regarding the move of abstraction and impounding licensing into the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR). One of the key milestones of 2020 in the Water abstraction plan included Defra launching its consultation in Spring 2020. Due to the current pandemic, this has now been put on hold until at least Spring 2021.
Envireau Water has been closely following this reform since the early 2000’s when the ideas of reform began to get discussed, providing insight and technical understanding for our clients, regarding the move the Environment Agency are proposing. Read the update here.
Take a read of what James Dodds, who leads on complicated abstraction licensing issues here, at Envireau Water has to say:
“This isn’t unexpected as there has been continuous delays with this program and the current situation adds to them. We continue to monitor this work, as we have since the programme began, and provide our comments to the Environment Agency, directly, via consultation responses and trade organisations. We will keep our clients, friends and the wider water resources community abreast of key issues as they arise, but there is still a long way to go, any many challenges lie ahead.”
