The Envireau Water Team are avid walkers, cyclists and even yoga lovers!

We aren’t travelling around much at present, so to lighten the mood and challenge ourselves (while respecting government guidelines) we are tracking all our daily exercise routines and carrying out our own ‘virtual travels’ instead. We want to see how far we can get and say hello to a few clients and suppliers along the way, that we are unable to visit in person at present!

What are the rules?

The first thing to be clear about is that the team are adhering to the government’s guidelines of one form of outdoor exercise per day. After all, we must all #stayhomesavelives.

Second to that, we acknowledge that any form of exercise does wonderful things for our immune systems and not to mention our mental health and as we’re a social bunch what better way to keep spirits high than doing something collectively.

As some light-hearted fun, we are tracking all our daily exercise routines to work out the total distance we have travelled as a team. It’s a combination of walking, running and cycling outdoors to the equivalent distance travelled, to any other form of exercise performed indoors such as yoga, Zumba and lifting a few weights!

From Monday to Sunday each week until the lockdown is lifted, our team will be tracking their exercise. Who knows where we will end up?!

Week One:

We’re off to a flying start and have travelled over 271 miles this week! Phil and Penny were our front runners having travelled nearly 40 miles. While the exercise which took us the furthest was walking, accounting for 192 miles!

Our virtual travels took us through the Welsh borders this week and on the way we said hello to Princes Gate and Radnor Hills!

We are also learning a lot about what team like to do to keep active which has included gardening, Salsa and trampolining!

Week Two:

Travelling further than we did last week with 320 miles, we virtually passed through the Scottish borders on route to say hello DIAGEO, Ironside Farrar and Eden Springs.

Walking appears to be a popular pastime at Envireau Water having accounted for 140 miles. This week it was Lee who reached the top of our leader board having covered 42 miles!

Week Three:

We are keeping the miles high, having collectively travelled 247 miles in Week 3! This took us on a virtual trip to the Lake District, where on the way we said hello to Aggregate Industries, Princes Food and Hanson.

This week Joe topped the leader board with 32 miles!

Week Four:

In our last week we travelled 170 miles, taking us on a trip down south to Kent. On the way, we said a virtual hello to Charltons Farm, Selwood and Elis.

Phil and Penny took the lead again for the last week, covering a total of 44 miles between them!

We're always excited to see our team grow, and we are thrilled to welcome Hannah to the team. Hannah joined our Scotland office at the end of June to gain some hydrogeological experience alongside completing her university studies, and we look forward to welcoming her officially in September where she will begin her career as a Hydrogeologist. Prior to joining, Hannah completed a BSc in Environmental Sciences at University of Glasgow and is currently working towards completing an MSc in Hydrogeology at the University of Strathclyde. During her masters and undergraduate degree, Hannah has participated in various fieldwork activities where she developed an in-depth understanding of applied hydrology, soil analysis and mapping techniques.

Desertification and drought are two of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century. Exacerbated by climate change, the devastating effects of both can be felt across the globe, with an estimated 40% of the world's population impacted by water scarcity events. As global temperatures continue to rise, and severe weather events increase, regions across the globe face the potential for increased frequency and severity of droughts, often progressing rapidly and unexpectedly. As of 29th May this year, a drought was officially declared in parts of the UK, having experienced the driest start to Spring in over 130 years. Whilst the recent rainfall at the start of June has helped to stabilise concerns, uncertainty for the months ahead still remain. How is the UK landscape affected by drought?
