Earth Science Week 2020

October 13, 2020

The annual celebration of Earth Science Week is growing year on year since it started 20 years ago. Reaching over 50 million people annually, it is the largest international education campaign promoting the earth sciences. Our team is built up of specialists with many different earth science backgrounds and what better way to celebrate the educational diversity of our team than on #EarthScienceWeek! We recognise the strength in our team, partly created by the varied educational background and see this as something to share and educate how vast this subject is… not to mention fun!

James our founder, starts us off! An undergraduate field mapping trip in Glencoe, followed by flying out to a Diamond mine in Botswana and a geophysics fieldtrip in Dartmoor focusing on mineralisation.

Phil, our Managing Director, loves nothing more than to escape his desk and get back nature for the odd site visit! Here he is installing a gauge board to monitor water levels.

A geology reunion involving Lee, one of our Principal Hydrologists posing by a tectonically rippled bedding plane within the Aberystwyth Grits.

Tamsin, one of our principals demonstrating a lifelong love of the earth.

Penny, one of our Princpal Hydrogeologists, along with old and current Envireau Water team members, taking part in a Severn Trent Mountain Challenge raising money for WaterAid. Along with ‘Penny and the Permian Unconformity.’

Deborah, one of our Principal Hydrogeologists, studied geology at undergraduate level specialising into hydrogeology at Masters level. Here she is showing her passion for geology.

Eleanor, our Senior Geoscientist, wrapped up in her survival suit for protection from Arctic waters! Eleanor undertook fieldwork in the Arctic, investigating Arctic hydrology, climate change and pollution. Safe to say it was a little roomy in there!

Steve, one of our Senior Geologists made his debut appearance in the Kalgoorlie Miner, while he worked in the gold mining and mineral exploration industry in Australia.

Michael, one of our Senior Hydrologists is taking every opportunity he can to pass on his passion of geography to a very young aspiring geographer… It’s never too early to learn about geography!

Rebecca, a Senior Hydrologist, exploring agricultural water uses and irrigation systems in Cyprus with the UK Irrigation Association. Even early career professionals can get travel scholarships!

Joe, our Environmental Scientist, out in British Columbia, Canada, absorbing all the geographical and geological formations the country has to offer!

Eileen, one of our Hydrogeologists, has joined us from the US. Here she is exploring the geological wonders in Arches National Park and, closer to her current home, Durdle Door and the Lake District!

Lauren, our Business Operations Manager studied geography at University and got the chance to visit Iceland, exploring all the geographical formations as well an ecology trip to Morocco involving tortoise and almond trees!

Josephine, our Marketing Assistant studied geology at University, taking her to many different parts of the UK. Here she is out roaming among the igneous rock found in Coniston, sketching the folds in the cliff faces of Connemara and finding gold in the Ochil Hills.

And finally, Freya, the office dog taking a look at the geology around Manchester.

This year the theme explores the ways that Earth materials impact humans and how human activity impacts these materials in the 21st century. By studying this subject, we can better understand these impacts and learn how to work with the earth. Afterall, #EverythingIsBuiltOnGeology and it is integral that earth sciences continue to be studied at Universities up and down the country! Our team is a perfect example of what opportunities the earth sciences have to offer; the ability to explore new places, to deeply understand the earth’s resources and structure, whilst protecting them.

We hope that we have persuaded even one potential earth science student with our array of photos! Our team is made up of talented individuals with a broad range of experience and diverse academic backgrounds. If you are interested to find out more about the team’s specialisms and interests, head over to our about page to take a read.

We are excited to welcome Dr Anna Hitchmough to our growing team, who recently joined Envireau Water as a Principal Technical Specialist. With over 25 years of consultancy experience in hydrogeology, Anna brings a wealth of expertise to our team. Anna joins us from Carbon Zero Consulting/RSK Geosciences, where her career has centred around ground-source heat pump systems. In her most recent role, Anna chaired RSK's Heat Decarbonisation Working Group and Hydrogeology Working Group. Anna brings extensive experience in quantitative risk assessments and NAPL characterisation and has completed significant work on several contaminated land projects, having previously served as Chair of the Geological Society's Contaminated Land Group. Anna's academic background stems from the University of Newcastle where she completed an MSc in Hydrology, followed by a PhD in Hydrogeology at the University of Birmingham. She is also a chartered geologist.

We're always excited to see our team grow, and we are thrilled to welcome Hannah to the team. Hannah joined our Scotland office at the end of June to gain some hydrogeological experience alongside completing her university studies, and we look forward to welcoming her officially in September where she will begin her career as a Hydrogeologist. Prior to joining, Hannah completed a BSc in Environmental Sciences at University of Glasgow and is currently working towards completing an MSc in Hydrogeology at the University of Strathclyde. During her masters and undergraduate degree, Hannah has participated in various fieldwork activities where she developed an in-depth understanding of applied hydrology, soil analysis and mapping techniques.

Our team just keeps on growing and we are delighted to welcome Rob Pickersgill as our newest member! Rob joined us at the end of June, bringing extensive experience across both hydrology and civil engineering, with a particular focus on hydraulic modelling, Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs), and Discharge Impact Assessments. Rob's academic background stems from the University of Nottingham, where he completed a MEng in Engineering, followed by an MSC in Global Urban Development and Planning at the University of Manchester. Rob joins our specialist surface water team and will be based at the RSK Group office in Bristol, providing hydrological services to a range of projects for our diverse client base, primarily within the development sector.

Desertification and drought are two of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century. Exacerbated by climate change, the devastating effects of both can be felt across the globe, with an estimated 40% of the world's population impacted by water scarcity events. As global temperatures continue to rise, and severe weather events increase, regions across the globe face the potential for increased frequency and severity of droughts, often progressing rapidly and unexpectedly. As of 29th May this year, a drought was officially declared in parts of the UK, having experienced the driest start to Spring in over 130 years. Whilst the recent rainfall at the start of June has helped to stabilise concerns, uncertainty for the months ahead still remain. How is the UK landscape affected by drought?
