Earth Science Week 2020

October 13, 2020

The annual celebration of Earth Science Week is growing year on year since it started 20 years ago. Reaching over 50 million people annually, it is the largest international education campaign promoting the earth sciences. Our team is built up of specialists with many different earth science backgrounds and what better way to celebrate the educational diversity of our team than on #EarthScienceWeek! We recognise the strength in our team, partly created by the varied educational background and see this as something to share and educate how vast this subject is… not to mention fun!

James our founder, starts us off! An undergraduate field mapping trip in Glencoe, followed by flying out to a Diamond mine in Botswana and a geophysics fieldtrip in Dartmoor focusing on mineralisation.

Phil, our Managing Director, loves nothing more than to escape his desk and get back nature for the odd site visit! Here he is installing a gauge board to monitor water levels.

A geology reunion involving Lee, one of our Principal Hydrologists posing by a tectonically rippled bedding plane within the Aberystwyth Grits.

Tamsin, one of our principals demonstrating a lifelong love of the earth.

Penny, one of our Princpal Hydrogeologists, along with old and current Envireau Water team members, taking part in a Severn Trent Mountain Challenge raising money for WaterAid. Along with ‘Penny and the Permian Unconformity.’

Deborah, one of our Principal Hydrogeologists, studied geology at undergraduate level specialising into hydrogeology at Masters level. Here she is showing her passion for geology.

Eleanor, our Senior Geoscientist, wrapped up in her survival suit for protection from Arctic waters! Eleanor undertook fieldwork in the Arctic, investigating Arctic hydrology, climate change and pollution. Safe to say it was a little roomy in there!

Steve, one of our Senior Geologists made his debut appearance in the Kalgoorlie Miner, while he worked in the gold mining and mineral exploration industry in Australia.

Michael, one of our Senior Hydrologists is taking every opportunity he can to pass on his passion of geography to a very young aspiring geographer… It’s never too early to learn about geography!

Rebecca, a Senior Hydrologist, exploring agricultural water uses and irrigation systems in Cyprus with the UK Irrigation Association. Even early career professionals can get travel scholarships!

Joe, our Environmental Scientist, out in British Columbia, Canada, absorbing all the geographical and geological formations the country has to offer!

Eileen, one of our Hydrogeologists, has joined us from the US. Here she is exploring the geological wonders in Arches National Park and, closer to her current home, Durdle Door and the Lake District!

Lauren, our Business Operations Manager studied geography at University and got the chance to visit Iceland, exploring all the geographical formations as well an ecology trip to Morocco involving tortoise and almond trees!

Josephine, our Marketing Assistant studied geology at University, taking her to many different parts of the UK. Here she is out roaming among the igneous rock found in Coniston, sketching the folds in the cliff faces of Connemara and finding gold in the Ochil Hills.

And finally, Freya, the office dog taking a look at the geology around Manchester.

This year the theme explores the ways that Earth materials impact humans and how human activity impacts these materials in the 21st century. By studying this subject, we can better understand these impacts and learn how to work with the earth. Afterall, #EverythingIsBuiltOnGeology and it is integral that earth sciences continue to be studied at Universities up and down the country! Our team is a perfect example of what opportunities the earth sciences have to offer; the ability to explore new places, to deeply understand the earth’s resources and structure, whilst protecting them.

We hope that we have persuaded even one potential earth science student with our array of photos! Our team is made up of talented individuals with a broad range of experience and diverse academic backgrounds. If you are interested to find out more about the team’s specialisms and interests, head over to our about page to take a read.

Envireau Water is delighted to welcome Tom Onslow to our North Office in Richmond! Tom joined us at the start of the month from Western Australia, where he gained experience working as a Field Hydrogeologist. Prior to this, Tom graduated from Newcastle University with a Master of Earth Science (MEarthSci). Tom is experienced in both field and desk-based activities, including the supervision of water exploration drilling programs, conducting hydrogeological sampling and logging, carrying out pumping tests and analysis and designing and installing groundwater monitoring networks. Tom has also built a strong foundation in technical reporting, having contributed to a wide range of water-related projects, particularly across the mining sector. At Envireau Water, Tom will continue to develop his hydrogeological expertise and provide technical support across a range of sectors both on site and in the office.

As the threat of climate change continues to grow, the occurrence of extreme weather events is becoming increasingly common across the UK, with the rising frequency of flooding and drought posing significant challenges nationwide. After the recent dry spell experienced across the UK, one thing is clear: climate change is a hazard affecting all industries and it is more important than ever for businesses to take proactive steps to secure their water supplies against these unpredictable weather events. We asked our Principal Hydrogeologist, Shona Symon , for her thoughts on the matter within the bottled water industry. Shona, can you explain the importance for operators to safeguard their water bottling plant against the impacts of climate change, and what challenges may arise if not adequately protected?

We're thrilled to welcome Bethan Joule to our growing Shrewsbury office! Bethan joins us as a Senior Hydrogeologist, bringing over six years of experience in technical roles at Wardell Armstrong. Prior to this, she graduated from Queen’s University Belfast with an MSc in Environmental Engineering in 2019. Bethan is experienced in preparing abstraction licence applications, delivering Hydrogeological Risk Assessments (HRAs), and overseeing a wide range of site investigations — including borehole drilling and hydrogeological testing - across multiple sectors, including minerals, waste, and construction. At Envireau Water , Bethan will be continuing to provide similar hydrogeological services to our extensive client base whilst also developing complimentary skills across our broad range of sectors.

Across the globe, plastic pollution is becoming an increasingly crucial topic, with an estimated 400 million tonnes being produced every year world wide. While the focus is often on visible plastic (including bottles, bags, and packaging), a growing body of research is turning its attention to the invisible threat of microplastics and emerging contaminants, which are increasingly finding their way into water sources, food chains and even the air we breathe. What are microplastics? Microplastics are a growing threat to the health of our planet. Despite being barely visible, these tiny plastic particles account for roughly 8% of global plastic waste, a number that is set to increase in the coming years.
